Do you know when your concealed carry license expires? Staying up to date with your renewal is essential to legally and safely continue carrying your firearm in the state of Illinois.
Renewing your concealed carry license can feel daunting if you’re unsure where to start. However, the process is simpler than you might think.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the steps to help you navigate the renewal process with ease.
What are the steps to renew?
Renewing your Concealed Carry license might be easier than you think. The recertification process includes the following three steps:
- Apply for a renewal online
- Complete your required training
- Pass the shooting qualifications
By completing these steps, you’ll ensure compliance with both local and state laws.
Submit the online form
The first step in the Illinois concealed carry renewal process is to complete the online renewal application. The Illinois State Police provides the application on their website for you to fill out. You can begin the renewal process up to 180 days before your license expires, giving you ample time to submit your application and complete the required training.
Complete the recertification class
The next step in the process is to find a concealed carry recertification class taught by an authorized firearms instructor. Once you receive confirmation your application has been approved, then you can schedule your recertification class.
This class consists of revisiting safety practices, reviewing state and federal laws, learning how to interact with law enforcement officers, and much more. In addition, you’ll have the opportunity to practice your shooting to get ready for the mandatory live fire qualification.
While this may seem similar to your initial certification class, you must undergo continuous training every 5 years to have your Illinois Concealed Carry license.
If you are unsure where to find a class, you can check out your local shooting range or find an instructor through the Illinois State Police website.
Pass the live fire qualification
This portion of the class is the last step to finishing the process. The test consists of 10 rounds fired off from 5 yards, 7 yards, and 10 yards.
Once you pass the live fire requirements, you have successfully fulfilled the steps to renew your Concealed Carry license. After, you’ll receive a proof of completion to have for your records.
