Learning proper gun range etiquette can help you feel more confident and prepared during your next visit to an indoor shooting range. Whether you’re new to the sport or just visiting a shooting range for the first time, understanding the expectations helps create a safe and respectful experience for everyone.

In this blog, we’ll cover the basics of indoor shooting range etiquette so you can enjoy your time at the range while being mindful of others around you.

Adhere to all posted safety instructions

Safety is the number one priority at any indoor shooting range, starting with following posted instructions. Range staff and Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are there to maintain a safe environment for everyone. By carefully following all posted rules and guidelines, you’re protecting yourself and creating an enjoyable, respectful space for other shooters.

Listen to the Range Safety Officer

Every shooting range you visit will have Range Safety Officers on duty. They are responsible for enforcing safety policies and range safety rules while overseeing practice. In addition, they provide essential guidance on firearm handling and gun safety while helping new shooters feel confident and informed.

If you have any questions, especially about range etiquette or firearm safety, you can always ask the RSO.

Follow the cardinal rules

All shooters at the range must follow the cardinal rules of gun safety.

These are the most basic rules that most people have learned, including:

  • Treat every firearm as if the gun is loaded
  • Keep your firearm pointed down and away from someone
  • Never pull the trigger unless you’re sure what your target is and what’s beyond it

Following these rules always helps prevent accidents and creates a safe, respectful environment for everyone at the shooting range. Even if they feel like second nature, reviewing and practicing is key to being a responsible gun owner.

Use approved ammunition

Another important rule of shooting range etiquette is to always use approved ammunition. Each range may have specific guidelines on the type and caliber of ammo allowed.

Using unapproved or incompatible ammunition can pose serious safety risks and potentially damage your firearms.

If you rent a firearm at the range, you can expect to purchase ammunition at the range. Before your visit, check with the range or ask a Range Safety Officer to ensure your ammunition meets their requirements.

Dress appropriately for practice

Close-toed shoes are a must to protect your feet from anything that may have dropped on the floor, including hot ammunition, cartridges, or debris. Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely but won’t interfere with your stance, grip, or gun firing.

Many shooters also prefer wearing hats with brims to protect their faces and eyes from ejected casings in addition to wearing proper eye protection.

Dressing appropriately helps you stay comfortable and supports a safer, more focused training experience.
