How confident do you feel when you pull the trigger? Finding the most comfortable grip and practicing trigger control can help with overall shooting accuracy.

Trigger control refers to firing the gun without it interfering with your ability to maintain proper form or accuracy. Whether you’re an experienced gun owner or a beginner, working on improving your trigger pull at the shooting range can make a big difference.

In this blog, we’ll cover some trigger control tips to help improve your accuracy at the range.

Understanding the fundamentals of trigger control

Before you pull the trigger, you want to ensure that your aim is steady and doesn’t disturb your sight. Shooters with good trigger control press the trigger straight back smoothly and consistently. Some of the biggest mistakes we see include:

  • Jerking: Loose, uncontrolled movement that disturbs your aim and causes inconsistent shots
  • Slapping: The trigger rebounds and forcefully strikes your trigger finger

To avoid these mistakes, focus on a slow, steady squeeze instead of a quick pull. Take your time and maintain consistent pressure through the entire motion to improve your accuracy.

Focusing on practicing the fundamentals at the shooting range will help you become a more comfortable and confident shooter.

Improving finger placement and trigger control

Your finger placement on the trigger matters because it plays a key role in accuracy. However, there’s not a universal placement because it comes down to personal preference. Consistent practice at the shooting range will help you find the placement that feels most natural and effective for you.

When finding the right finger placement for optimal trigger control, you should only use the pad of your finger on the center of the trigger. This placement will give you the best control.

Using the tip of your finger does not give you the same level of control. Your finger can easily slip and cause the shot to fire off to the left or the right. However, you should always place your finger wherever you feel most comfortable.

Additionally, practicing a straight pullback will help improve the accuracy of your shots. You want the pull to be as smooth as possible. Any sudden jerky movements will disturb your line of sight and make your shots go off target.

If you find that your shooting is inconsistent, try working on different finger placements to help improve trigger control.

Finding grips that work best for you

Maintaining stability is key to improving your shooting accuracy. One of the easiest ways to stabilize your trigger is by finding the right grip for your handgun.

A good grip stabilizes your trigger control and helps manage recoil, improves overall performance, and keeps the gun pointed in the right direction.

A firm grip pressure provides a strong, consistent hold to prevent the firearm from shifting during the trigger pull and reduces the risk of misfiring. Having a proper grip also makes shooting more comfortable by helping absorb recoil and keeping the gun firmly in place with each shot.

Finding the best grip comes down to personal preference, so practicing and adjusting is essential until you see what feels most natural for you.
