Deer hunting season is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to brush up on gun safety and hunting regulations to prevent accidents in the field. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or getting ready for your first trip, safety is the key to any successful deer hunting season.
Follow the golden rules of gun safety.
The golden rules of firearm safety should be ingrained in every firearm owner’s brain. The golden rules refer to the common safe gun handling practices that help prevent avoidable accidents. Here are some rules you should always keep in mind when using a gun, so you can stay safe.
- Always assume a gun is loaded and keep your gun unloaded when not in use.
- Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction before you’re ready to shoot.
- Keep your fingers off the trigger until you’re ready to pull the trigger.
Be careful when using tree stands
Tree stands can be dangerous and pose a fall risk. Tree stands are the leading cause of any hunting-related accidents according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Knowing how to properly use a tree stand will prevent injuries and fatalities in the field.
Tree stands range in height depending on how far off the ground you want to be. Tree stands are typically between 10-30 feet. Falling from a 20-foot tree stand can result in serious injuries, including broken bones, concussions, spinal injuries, or worse.
The IDNR urges hunters to use a fall arrest system, such as a safety harness, to prevent bodily injuries. Using a safety harness can help if you fall. You can avoid tree stand falls and injuries by inspecting your stands before use and adhering to all safety guidelines.
Wear the appropriate clothing
Every hunter is legally required to wear a solid blaze orange or blaze pink hat and outerwear during deer hunting seasons in Illinois. This rule applies to anyone hunting on public land or land owned by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
The blaze orange and blaze pink should cover at least 400 square inches to ensure you’re visible to other hunters in the area.
While complying with these visibility and safety rules, you may wear any base thermal layers underneath to protect yourself from the weather and be able to move freely and comfortably.
Always know your target
You must know exactly what your target is before firing. Ensure your target has a safe backdrop and your view is clear and unobstructed. Knowing exactly what you’re aiming at will prevent accidents. Maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings as a gun owner will further enhance safety during your hunt.
